THE BEST OF LISBON 

 

1| AlFAMA

This quaint medieval district (once the Moorish and Jewish quarter before it became a fishing community) is the oldest neighborhood in Europe after El Pópulo in Cadiz. It's like a small village, standing as a time capsule to the years before Lisbon was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, as it remained standing thanks to its rock-solid foundations.

2| GRAÇA

This historic district is situated in one of the seven hills of Lisbon. Its varied architecture, the presence of ancient residential villas, such as Villa Berta and his two wonderful sights make it very special and unique.

3| BAIXA-CHIADO

Baixa which displays a lively atmosphere for its visitors. The Praça dos Restauradores commemorate Portugal’s independence from Spain. Surrounding buildings, which were rebuilt after the Great Earthquake by the order of Marques de Pombal, reflect the architectural taste of the end of 18th century, and wide boulevards remind 19th century of Paris. Although it was once a very popular commercial center and nowadays it seems to have lost its fame, its old fashioned shops still continue to exist.

4| BELÉM

Belém is situated on the northern banks of the River Tagus and from the ancient harbours of Belem, ships set sail around the world, and many of the 14th century “voyages of discovery” departed from here.

The easiest method to travel to Belem is by the eletric number 15E tram, which departs from Praça do Comércio or you can take the bus 728 in Santa Apolónia Station. There are numerous cafes and restaurants, but it is highly recommended to try a Pastel de Nata from “Pastéis de Belém”, the traditional home of the delicious cakes that go by the same name.

5| PARQUE DAS NAÇÕES

Is the place of the Expo 98. There is possible see architecture by Calatrava and Alvaro Siza Vieira next to other eye-catching buildings by lesser-known architects, with the Tagus and one of the world's longest bridges as the backdrop.

6| SINTRA

The first center of romantic architecture in Europe is found right outside Lisbon. Sintra is a magically green town dotted with fantasy palaces, and with an exquisite, exotic feel that's been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

MONUMENTS IN NAZARÉ

Nazaré Center

Santo António Chapel is located at Avenida Manuel Remigio, just in front of Nazaré Beach, and it was built in the 19th century at local fishermen expenses.

 

Capela Nossa Sr.ª dos Aflitos

Small rectangular chapel, with a unique and ample space, dedicated to the cult of Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos. It was built in 1760, built by Cistercian monks of Alcobaça, to receive the tithe of the fish there, given the refusal of the fishermen to pay the tax to Pederneira.

 

Museum of Dry Fish 

Fish drying in Nazaré is a remarkable trade mark of local identity. This living museum is both a tourism attraction and a privileged means of offering better working conditions for dry fish sellers.

 

Traditionals Boats

Stroll along the promenade toward the new harbor, you’ll come to traditional boats in the sand, with prows high to cut through the surf. Try to imagine the beach (before 1986) littered with boats like these, with old men mending their nets. Oxen would haul the boats out each day.

 

 

Sítio Neighborhood

Nossa Senhora da Nazaré Sanctuary

This was built in the 14th century, by King D. Fernando (1357-1383) order. This is the oldest marian temple in Portugal and its connected to both Legend of Nazaré and D. Fuas Roupinho.

 

Capela da Memória

This was built in the 14th century, over the legendary Cage of Nazaré at Sítio da Nazaré.The vaults cover of the chapel is covered with figurative tails about D. Fuas Roupinho and they really worth being seen.

 

Royal Palace of Nazaré – Closed

Royal Palace was built in 1718 has a place to house the Royal Family when visiting the Nazaré Sanctuary. Its noticed the presence of Queen D. Maria I (1777-1816), her sun King D. João VI (1816-1826) and both his suns King D. Pedro IV (1826) and D. Miguel (1828-1834).

Nazaré Lift

Also known as Funicular of Nazaré, this left opened in 1889, it is an excellent example of the transportations architecture from the late 19th century. It was built by the engineer Raul Mesnier du Poniard, a Gustave Eiffel learner, with some famous other works in Lisbon such as Santa Justa Lift.

 

Dr.Joaquim Manso Museum

Its goal is to make an introduction of Nazaré by a ethnographical, archeological and historical pass, highlighting its most important episodes.

 

Teatro Chaby Pinheiro

Chaby-Pinheiro Theater is unique recreative facility from the early 20th century and projected by the swiss architect Ernesto Korrodi. Located behind Nazaré Sactuary it is a place where the cultural events play the main rola, but it deserve to be mentioned also for its artistic interior decoration.

 

São Miguel Arcanjo Fort

São Miguel Arcanjo Fort was built in the 16th century, during King D. Sebastião (1557-1578) reign and it is a military facility, working as a coast watch place. Later it played an important role on the fortification system created during Portuguese Restoration War (1640-1668) in the 17th century, by King D. João IV (1640-1656).

 

In the early 19th century, it was again a central place during Peninsular War (1808-1810) and a few years later during Portuguese Liberal Wars (1828-1834) between the liberal (King D. Pedro IV (1826)) and absolutists (King D. Miguel (1828-1833)).

In the early 20th century there was built a lighthouse to help the navigation in the zone.

 

Located at the Promontory of Nazaré, close to Sítio da Nazaré, the Fort is classified has Public Interest Building since 1978.

Besides its historical importance and its military usage, today the fort is heritage attraction but it also plays an important role has a viewpoint to watch the Big Waves created by Nazaré Canyon and made famous by the American surfer Garrett McNamara.

Pederneira Neighborhood 

 

Pederneira Pillory

This pillory is a unique exemple of the administrative and judicial architecture in Portugal. It was built in 1514, after King D. Manuel I (1495-1521) gave the village its foral, being this the certification of Pederneiras autonomy and county capital at that time. It is located in front of the Former City Hall, location that represented to this square a special attention because of its legacy, identity and history.

Pederneira Parochial Church

It was built in the 16th century and it is another example of the variety of religious temples possible to visit at Nazaré county. Located in Pederneira perish, it is also known by Fábrica Paroquial de Nossa Senhora das Areias e de S. Pedro da Pederneira Church.

 

Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Pederneira Church

It was first built in he 16th century to house Irmandade da Misericórdia da Pederneira. It’s actual version was built in the 17th century and the temple highlights are its artistic work, seen both on the inside and outside and which make this an artistic attraction at Pederneira perish.

 

Old Fountian

Old Fountain, also known as Fonte da Vila (Village Fountain) was built in the 18th century, being a baroque style water facility, typical from that period where water architecture example can be found everywhere. Nevertheless it still is a important local heritage, symbol of the local identity and legacy.

The Fountain is located in the road that connects Nazaré and Pederneira.

 

Pedralva Park

Used as a walk path between Nazaré and Pederneira, its was rehabilitated as a garden or leisure space.
